Those of us who foolishly thought that by the time we were in our fifties we would be sitting somewhere gorgeous - by the coast perhaps - sipping gin and tonics, with the world of work just a nasty memory. The reality is that we've reluctantly had to down-shift our ideals, buy cheap, live cheap and start to be penny-wise, pound... whatever.
